The President of the Republic of Slovenia on official visit to the Grand Master<\/b><\/p>\n
Rome 4 December 2024 – <\/i>The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nata\u0161a Pirc Musar, was received today at the Magistral Palace by the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Fra’ John Dunlap. This was the second visit to the Order of Malta by a President of the Republic of Slovenia, with which diplomatic relations were established in 1992.\u00a0A\u00a0cooperation agreement was signed in 2022.<\/p>\n
The Grand Master expressed\u00a0his\u00a0satisfaction\u00a0at\u00a0the excellent state of\u00a0bilateral\u00a0relations and\u00a0his\u00a0gratitude for Slovenia’s support\u00a0of\u00a0the Order\u2019s\u00a0activities: \u201cThis visit is an opportunity to\u00a0emphasize the important work carried out by the National Association and the\u00a0Relief\u00a0Corps\u00a0OMAS\u00a0(Order of Malta Aid Slovenia)\u00a0nationwide\u00a0and abroad. \u00a0This is\u00a0a commitment\u00a0we wish to consolidate and further develop to\u00a0meet\u00a0the social, health and emergency needs of\u00a0suffering people,\u201d the Grand Master\u00a0stated.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, President Pirc Musar invited the Grand Master to visit Slovenia, expressing her\u00a0great\u00a0appreciation\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Order’s humanitarian efforts towards refugees, victims of natural disasters and those affected by violence\u00a0worldwide. “Your contribution to reducing and alleviating suffering is invaluable, especially today when the fundamental principles of solidarity and humanity are being\u00a0challenged\u00a0in so many parts of the world,\u201d the President said.\u00a0The President also paid special tribute to the volunteers\u00a0who,\u00a0during the floods in August 2023,\u00a0were among the first\u00a0to respond: \u201cYour teams worked tirelessly in the hardest hit areas, such as Lu\u010de and Sol\u010dava, providing assistance in the critical first hours after the disaster. We will never forget your support\u201d.<\/p>\n
The possibility of developing a collaboration in African countries and, in Slovenia, in the area of palliative care, was also mentioned during the talks.<\/p>\n
Referring\u00a0to the international situation, the Grand Master and the Slovenian President shared\u00a0their\u00a0concern\u00a0about\u00a0conflict situations, especially in\u00a0Ukraine and\u00a0the Middle East,\u00a0agreeing\u00a0that multilateral\u00a0cooperation is the most appropriate and effective way to tackle\u00a0global threats. In addition to carrying out major humanitarian operations,\u00a0notably\u00a0since 2022\u00a0in Ukraine,\u00a0the Order of Malta is also active\u00a0on\u00a0an advocacy level,\u00a0calling\u00a0in particular\u00a0for\u00a0respect for international humanitarian law, the protection of civilians and relief operators in situations of conflict, religious freedom and other themes. The High Charges of the Order have made several public statements recently to this effect,\u00a0notably\u00a0at\u00a0UN events such as the Summit of the Future, the Security Council\u00a0open debate\u00a0on Leadership for Peace and the Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n
The Order of Malta in Slovenia<\/b><\/p>\n
The activities of the National Association and OMAS (Order of Malta Aid Slovenia) focus mainly on first-aid assistance to pilgrims at various shrines; medical assistance; distribution of food, medicines and hygiene items; school transport and accommodation for needy families and elderly people in rural and remote areas, for asylum seekers and migrants; organization of summer camps and other initiatives for Roma children. The Order’s entities in Slovenia are\u00a0active\u00a0in emergencies and natural disasters in the country and abroad, such as in 2020 for the Beirut explosion, in 2021 for the earthquake in Croatia, in 2023 for the severe floods in Slovenia\u00a0(the worst natural disaster ever, with EUR 9.9 billion of damage) and in 2023 for the earthquake in Turkey.
